The History of the Stewart Cup
In June 1946 the Committee of The Grange Golf Club purchased 34 acres of adjoining land on the Southern Boundary from T.J.B.Stewart to enable them to extend the present Golf Course.
The Cost of this land 150 pounds per acre. Total price being 5110 pounds
April 1949 Mr. T.J.B. Stewart gave 100 Guineas to buy a Gold Cup for a Competition at the Club this being named Stewart Gold Cup. In 1998 this Cup was Valued at $7500.
The first Stewart Gold Cup tournament was played over 36 holes and was held in July 1950 but is now a 72 hole event.
The field, containing some of Auckland's best players, along with many of our own members enjoyed the tournament
Mrs. Stewart presented the Cup on behalf of her late husband on this occasion and for many years to follow. |
